A Child Advocacy Center, CAC, is a community-based facility which uses a multidisciplinary approach to reduce trauma to child victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. Collaboration exists between medical, mental health, prosecutorial, child protective service, and law enforcement professionals in a effort to serve the best interests of young victims. To assist with the healing process, services for non-offending family members of victims are also found at a CAC.
Program coordinates investigative and treatment efforts involving law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, medical examinations, and mental health services. This is all in an effort to prevent further trauma and provide healing from abuse for children.

Upon the request of law enforcement or child protective services, program conducts historical interviews and physical examinations of children to determine whether there are injuries or other forms of physical evidence that are consistent with neglect, emotional deprivation/failure to thrive, or physical or sexual abuse that constitute battered child syndrome.

Advocates work with families who have an open child abuse case following emergency response or with families who have been identified as being at risk for child abuse or neglect. Services provided or coordinated for the family may include individual, group, family or conjoint counseling; home management training; parenting skills training; shelter care; and/or respite care.
